Winter Series ~ Cozy Mittens

Second in the serie: a cozy pair of mittens!

I had been on the hunt for some nice mittens for a few years now. The ones I liked were mostly made out of wool. Which is nice, but not when you're cycling a lot. The wind (and rain) just goes right through them! If you can't find what you're looking for: make them yourself :)

And so I did. I used interior fabric, because it is sturdy and quite water- and windproof. For lining I opted for some fluffy shearling material. So soft and cozy! And an absolute dream to work with.

Since most mitten patterns are for flexible (wool) material, I needed to find something else. I found this glove pattern which seems to do the trick! By tracing around the fingers I altered the pattern. I also added some more width towards the bottom. The first pair I made was so small, no one but me could fit there hands in them! I have to add my hands are pretty small ;)
This pair turned out slightly oversized. But I figured, if it gets really cold, I could even wear light gloves underneath them!

The pattern for the lining is slightly smaller, so the two layers would fit in nicely. I also added a shearling cuff so they would look less like oven mittens..

They do the trick pretty well! This is the first winter my hands weren't freezing when I arrived at school. Even in the rain my hands remained dry and warm :)
And the pattern makes me happy.

Yes, I am aware of the creepiness of this last picture. But you can see the nice details of the fabric here. And, notice how they match my eye colour?! Haha

Do you prefer gloves or mittens? I think mittens are so much warmer because my fingers are together! Too bad though I have to take them off to send a text, or unlock my bike.. ;)

  1. Oh, these are just adorable. I love the pretty floral pattern. I can't believe you made them yourself. They are just perfect. I like both gloves and mittens... so long as they keep my fingers warm. :)

    1. Hi! Thank you! :)
That's ok, a friend of mine also went to Paris last weekend, she couldn't visit the restaurant either. We all need to go back and visit! They serve wine in baby bottles haha (can you tell I have slight obsession with this place, plus I really want to go back to Paris!)
